What You Need to Become a Driving Instructor

To legally work as a driving instructor in the UK, you must complete our certified training programme and pass all three parts of the DVSA’s ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) qualification process.

The Three ADI Tests:

Part 1 – Theory Test
A computer-based test made up of multiple-choice questions and hazard perception videos — similar in format to the learner theory test, but more in-depth.

Part 2 – Driving Ability Test
An advanced driving test assessing your skills behind the wheel. You’ll be expected to demonstrate a high standard of driving ability, safety, and awareness.

Part 3 – Instructional Ability Test
This test evaluates how well you can teach others to drive. You’ll deliver a live lesson with a real pupil (or role-play) while being assessed on your teaching techniques and communication.

Start Earning Before You Qualify

After successfully completing Part 2, you’ll have the option to join Pass Masterz as a trainee instructor under a Trainee Licence, allowing you to start earning while you gain real-world teaching experience ahead of Part 3.

Alternatively, you may choose to gain unpaid experience by teaching family or friends if that suits your circumstances better.

Minimum Requirements

Before you begin your journey, make sure you meet the DVSA’s legal eligibility criteria:

• Be 21 years or older

• Have held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years

• Have no more than 5 penalty points on your licence (within the last 4 years)

• Be able to pass a DBS (criminal record) check
